The bluebirds came out on top in this Nathaniel MG cup encounter with a 2-1 win over a strong Goytre United side who had previously been unbeaten this season.
Always strong defensively...it was a question of whether the bluebirds could get into their goalscoring stride sufficiently to win the match. Headed goals from the hardworking Joe Leahy and Tim Hicks saw the win secured.
The only negative aspect to the game was the sending off of Sam Rodon for two late yellow cards on 87 and 89 minutes.
Bluebirds match reporter Rob Nisbet was quick to point out that ALL ten of the bluebirds players that finished the game were locals, eight of them having come through the Academy. The fine work being done by Academy Director Steve Batty and his excellent team of coaches is now bearing significant fruit.
Another fine perfomance by 16 year old left back Alaric Jones was of particular note but a 'nod' must go to young keeper Nick Jones who had not seen much action until injury time at the end of the game. The bluebirds were under seige after going down to ten men Nick stepped up and produced two superb saves to deny the Goytre United strikers and preserve the lead.
All in all a very pleasing night for the club.
