This was a bizarre weekend for the Bluebirds, who went up to second place in the league with their poorest performance of the season.
On the previous Tuesday they had played beautifully at Barry Town United and certainly did not deserve to lose. On Saturday they stuttered and misfired without being able to add to their single early goal.
They started crisply and twice in the first three minutes Steffan Williams had threatened before in the 4th minute Steffan Davies picked up a ball down the middle and finished with complete assurance. Ashley Bevan went on a few runs and a ball in from Matthew Broome saw Davies tangle clumsily with keeper Fletcher before the ball flew clear. But as the half wore on the attacking grew increasingly disjointed and when Risca attacked in breakaways they often looked menacing. James Gwilt twice had to come the rescue with fine close-range blocks.
Half Time 1-0
Risca meanwhile were picking up quite a few yellow cards but they were able to frustrate the Blues on into the second half. Briefly, from the 55th minute to the 70th, the Blues managed to exert a little untidy pressure and in one attack Bevan's shot crashed back off the bar before the ball back in saw Davies launch into a diving header and for the ball to smash down into the pitch and fly back up over the bar. But as the game wore on their touch and their passing let them down quite badly and they were having to play with the threat from a Risca team who were not prepared to sit back and be beaten. The Blues finally limped home 1-nil but will not feel too pleased with their performance, though delighted with the 3 points.
Full Time 1-0
